Music and Memories
Music and Memories
Have you ever thought just how important is the link between music and memories? Think of this scenario. You’re busy doing something, maybe a job around the house. Perhaps you are driving the car with the radio playing in the background. Suddenly a certain song starts playing. Your ears ‘prick up’ as you recognize the song. Soon you find yourself singing along with it. Not only are you enjoying the song, but you also find it’s evoking memories. It could be of that special holiday or other significant events from many years ago. You find yourself remembering where you were and who you were with. You can even ‘see’ it all with your mind’s eye. More details come into the picture. It’s almost like being transported back in a time machine as those events come flooding back to you. Like me, you’ve probably experienced this many times.
Yes, this is how music and memories bring back details in a way like nothing else can!
Music is powerful!
Did you know music lives in several parts of the brain? Research shows these areas of the brain are least likely to be affected by Alzheimer’s. This is important, as it helps to explain why music can benefit so many that are now living with dementia. We have found there is so much evidence ‘out there’ now that proves how music is working it’s magic for these folk, and here’s a little insight as to why. Music produces a powerful hormone, Dopamine, in the brain.
Why is this good news for you?
As a person caring at home for the elderly, we’re sure that you will naturally want to help to produce more of this hormone for those you love and care for. Realizing the positive impact it can have on their lives is quite an incentive! However, the great news is that we have also seen how we can easily boost our Dopamine levels. No, not through injections or more pills but one of the most popular social activities…. sharing music and memories No wonder music is often quoted as the ‘best medicine’ (along with laughter)
You can help by using music and memories.
Why not take a few moments to see why music has this powerful effect on us? How about planning more time to share music with your loved ones? While you are enjoying this special time together, you are also raising Dopamine levels. Also, you are helping to stimulate memories and promote their well-being. Yes, all these ultimate benefits are happening for them (and you!) while the music plays on!
Right now Louise and I are developing an exciting new program. Our purpose is to help you use music in an extremely effective way to help bring back memories and lift the spirits of those you care for and improve your quality of life at the same time.
We are feeling very passionate about what we are putting together for you! Keep up to date with our progress as more news will be coming your way soon, – check out our blogs.
