“RACE AGAINST DEMENTIA” – A Drivers Dream!
On a Mission
Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, the three-time Formula 1 world champion racing driver is on a mission. He has created the international charity “Race Against Dementia”.
He points out that if we fail to find a cure quickly, one in three people born in today’s world will develop dementia.
Globally, the number of individuals aged 40 years and older living with dementia is estimated to nearly triple by 2050, with its prevalence projected to rise from 57 million cases in 2019 to 153 million cases in 2050, according to study findings recently published in ‘The Lancet Public Health.’
The aim of the charity is to take an active part in helping to find a cure for the disease that is responsible for his beloved wife Helen currently needing round the clock care.
Stewart, a still very active 82-year-old, is putting his drive (no pun intended!) and energy into using the research and development techniques developed in the racing industry to speed up the search for a cure for what at present is deemed as incurable – the various forms of dementia.
Despite the ongoing efforts of the medical fraternity over many years, there is still no cure and no preventative medication currently available for any of the known forms of dementia. Jackie feels strongly that, perhaps with more funding and a more sophisticated modern approach a solution could be reached.
Introducing fast problem-solving methods as used in the top racing teams, and adopting the same exploratory culture found in Formula 1 could serve to accelerate the progress being made.
More Funding Needed
One of the ways money is being raised for “Race Against Dementia” is the Sir Jackie Stewart Classic being presented by Rolex due to be held on 18-19 June 2022r at Thirlestane Castle – a magnificent 16th-century castle set within the beautiful Lauderdale Estate in the Scottish Borders.
An event that is set to feature memorabilia from the Scot’s successful career including helmets, cars and trophies. With more than 1200 vintage and classic vehicles of all shapes and sizes making the journey to Thirlestane, this is one of the biggest and best car rallies in the country.
There will also be a sprint along the castle’s driveway organised by the Scottish Motor Racing Club, and a classic car show from the Borders Vintage Automobile Club. Money raised from the event will go to “Race Against Dementia” – a Drivers Dream, and Stewart believes that the world of motorsport can significantly help in the push for a cure.
We look forward to hearing more about this innovative charity and its accomplishments. We will keep you posted!
